MICROCRYSTALLINE CELLULOSE (MCC)

ALFACEL -PH is the Trade name for Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC) manufactured by the company. ALFACEL - PH is made from Purified and partially depolymerised Alfa Cellulose relatively free from both organic and inorganic contaminants. It is insoluble in water, dilute acids, common organic solvents and oils. Partially soluble with swelling in dilute alkali, fine, white, odourless, edible and metabolically inert powder. It has excellent water absorptive, swelling and dispersion properties which make it useful for food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations, particularly tablets and capsules.

PRODUCT BENEFITS

Alfacel -PH Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) is a product designed primarily for Pharmaceutical solid dosage formulations. Its suitability for tableting operations is shown by the number & variety of functions it can perform.

DIRECT COMPRESSION

  • Binder
  • Disintegrant
  • Flow aid
  • Filler

WET GRANULATION

  • Binder
  • Rapid wicking action
  • Permits fast addition of granulation fluid

ADVANTAGES OF USING ALFACEL MCC

  • Performs on all types of equipment
  • High carrying ability - Use less
  • Coherent slug transfer
  • Low friability
  • Highly compressible even with problem formulations
  • Low lubricant sensitivity
  • Biological inert
  • Nondesiccating
  • Uniformity - lot to lot

Alfacel -P can be used in all methods of tableting, it is most effectively used in direct compression. When using Alfacel-P only a simple three step procedure of weighing, mixing and compressing is required to prepare a wide variety of tablets. Because of its high chemical purity and low moisture content, improved chemical and colour stability of the tablets can result with the use of Alfacel-P.

PERFORMANCE OF ALFACEL-PH IN TABLETING
ADVANTAGES

FUNCTIONS

Chemical Purity     Non reactive organic ingredients, extremely low level of
inorganic &   organic contaminants.

Binder     High hardness level, low friability, excellent compression.

  Disintegrant     Promotes rapid disintegration

Co-lubricant     Requires less lubricant than other typical binders.

The amount of Alfacel-P used in the direct compression tableting depends on the flow & compression characteristics of the formulation's other ingredients. Normally about 20 percent of the formulation is Alfacel-P, but the typical range is from 10 to 50 percent.
When added to granulations, generally 15 percent is used, it is often added to both the wet mass and the dried granulation before compression. As with direct compression, the use level ranges widely from under 10 percent to much higher levels, depending on the application.

ENCAPSULATION WITH ALFACEL MCC
The newer technology for manufacturing capsule dosage forms has created another area for the application of ALAFACEL. The properties imparted to a formulation by ALFACEL are ideal for processing on high speed, gravity fill equipment. As a binder, ALFACEL is especially useful in formulations which are compressed before insertion into the hard gelatin capsule.
